Royal Caribbean has broken ground for a new pier on its private island of CocoCay, the first step in a multi-year agreement between the cruise line and The Bahamas announced back in March. Construction is scheduled for completion in June 2018.The agreement will also see a massive water park that Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley has said "will eclipse any other water park in the world," as well new spaces for Bahamian vendors and craftsmen added.
The pier will eliminate the need for tendering and will enable to the island to accommodate the line's Oasis-class ships. CocoCay will remain open during the construction.
The captain of Enchantment of the Seas, which was in port Wednesday, as well the ship's executive committee and about 20 members of Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
